kolkata bridge accident - Collapse of Kolkata flyover kills 18 people

The latest breaking news today that made the headlines was collapse of Kolkata flyover. The incident took place near Ganesh Talkies, a densely populated area. The area houses many commercial as well as residential buildings.  At least 18 people have been killed and 70 plus several injured. It is said that a number of vehicles and people are trapped in the debris. Five policemen are trapped but alive. Rescue teams are using heat sensors to understand where people are trapped. 

Rescue operations are going in full swing and an eye witness said that at least 100 people could be trapped. The Indian Army and NDRF teams have been pressed into service. It is reported that there was fire under the bridge and it sparked from spilled fuel.

The bridge was expected to be completed in 2010 but has missed 8 deadlines till date. The next deadline for completion is December 2016.

The flyover, named after Vivekanda, was one of the close projects of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee since 2011.

Rajnath Singh is also in West Bengal and he expressed his deepest condolences to the families who lost their beloved. He tweeted, “Spoke to DG NDRF who apprised me of the situation at the accident site in Kolkata. NDRF teams have been rushed to the spot for rescue ops.”

“Monumental tragedy. Rescue ops on. Many feared dead," Derek O'Brien, spokesperson of the ruling Trinamool Congress mentioned in a tweet.

కోల్‌కతాలో ఫ్లైఓవర్‌ కుప్పకూలి 17మంది మృతి , మృతుల సంఖ్య పెరిగే అవకాశం

పశ్చిమ్‌బంగ రాజధాని నగరం కోల్‌కతా ఉత్తర ప్రాంతంలోని గిరీష్‌ పార్క్‌ సమీపంలో నిర్మాణంలో ఉన్న వివేకానంద ఫ్లైఓవర్‌ వంతెన కుప్పకూలడంతో 17 మంది చనిపోయారు. మృతుల సంఖ్య పెరిగే అవకాశం ఉందని అధికారులు తెలిపారు. శిథిలాల కింద 70 మందికిపైగా చిక్కుకున్నట్లు సమాచారం. పారామిలటరీ బలగాలు, స్థానిక ప్రజలు శిథిలాల కింద చిక్కుకున్న వారిని కాపాడటానికి సహాయ కార్యక్రమాలను ప్రారంభించారు. 2011 సంవత్సరంలోనూ నగరంలోని ఆల్టాడంగా ప్రాంతంలో బ్రిడ్జ్ కూలిన ఘటన లో ముగ్గురు గాయపడిన విషయం తెలిసిందే. మృతుల కుటుంబాలకు రూ.5లక్షలు, తీవ్రంగా గాయపడిన వారికి రూ.2లక్షలు, స్వల్పంగా గాయపడిన వారికి రూ.లక్ష చొప్పున నష్టపరిహారం చెల్లిస్తామని ఆ రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం ప్రకటించింది. అయితే, 2009 లో ప్రారంభమైన ఈ ఫ్లైఓవర్‌ నిర్మాణం ఎనిమిది సార్లు వాయిదా పడుతూ ఇప్పటికి కూడా పూర్తికాకపోవడం గమనార్హం. నాణ్యతా ప్రమాణాలు, పర్యవేక్షణ లేమి కారణంగానే ఈ ఘటన చోటుచేసుకుందని పలువురు ఆవేదన వ్యక్తం చేశారు.

2007 లో హైదరాబాద్ నడిబొడ్డున నిర్మాణంలో ఉన్న పంజాగుట్ట ఫ్లైఓవర్‌ కూలి ఇద్దరు మరణించడం విదితమే.

Train catches fire at Nampally Railway station

Andhra Pradesh: A train bogie caught fire at Nampally railway station in Hyderabad. The air conditioned coach of the train, which was stationed on platform number six suddenly caught fire. The mishap occurred at Loco Shed of Nampally station. Fire engines came on the spot within few minutes and fire workers were able to put down the fire.

The shocking part is that neither Railway officials nor fire workers had clue about how the boogie got fire. According to officials, “The place where the train was stationed has zero chances for any electric sparks. Also since the train was stationed, there is no chance to get fire.”

Fortunately there was no loss of life and no one was injured during the mishap.  The fire authorities have registered a case and the investigations are in progress.
