kolkata bridge accident - Collapse of Kolkata flyover kills 18 people

The latest breaking news today that made the headlines was collapse of Kolkata flyover. The incident took place near Ganesh Talkies, a densely populated area. The area houses many commercial as well as residential buildings.  At least 18 people have been killed and 70 plus several injured. It is said that a number of vehicles and people are trapped in the debris. Five policemen are trapped but alive. Rescue teams are using heat sensors to understand where people are trapped. 


Rescue operations are going in full swing and an eye witness said that at least 100 people could be trapped. The Indian Army and NDRF teams have been pressed into service. It is reported that there was fire under the bridge and it sparked from spilled fuel.


The bridge was expected to be completed in 2010 but has missed 8 deadlines till date. The next deadline for completion is December 2016.
The flyover, named after Vivekanda, was one of the close projects of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee since 2011.

Rajnath Singh is also in West Bengal and he expressed his deepest condolences to the families who lost their beloved. He tweeted, “Spoke to DG NDRF who apprised me of the situation at the accident site in Kolkata. NDRF teams have been rushed to the spot for rescue ops.”
“Monumental tragedy. Rescue ops on. Many feared dead," Derek O'Brien, spokesperson of the ruling Trinamool Congress mentioned in a tweet.
